ChSTU Student Helps Deliver Safety Session for Cherkasy Schoolchildren

A fourth-year student of the Department of Social Security at Cherkasy State Technological University, Serhii Chesha, took part in delivering an educational safety session for primary school students in Cherkasy as part of the project “Safety Classroom Sessions.”

Alongside his studies, Chesha works as a leading specialist in emergency management at the Cherkasy Regional Organization of the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, combining academic training with hands-on professional experience.

The session, focused on safety rules during power outages, was attended by second-grade students of Cherkasy Specialized School No. 13. In today’s context, raising children’s awareness of how to act in emergency situations is especially important, as protecting the youngest members of the community remains a shared priority.

During the session, students learned essential guidelines for staying safe during blackouts and ways to retain warmth at home. Together with Red Cross specialists, the children explored a practical “resilience algorithm” for families. They were taught how to act in the dark and why staying calm matters, how layered clothing helps preserve heat, which heating methods can be dangerous, and why carbon monoxide poses a serious threat, as well as how to respond to the smell of gas and safely use household appliances once electricity is restored.

Organizers placed special emphasis on an interactive learning format. The session combined presentations, real-life scenario discussions, physical activities, and an educational quiz titled “Safe or Risky?”- which quickly became a favorite among the students. Through play-based learning, the children practiced distinguishing between safe and unsafe behaviors, reinforcing their knowledge in an engaging way.
